KUALA TERENGGANU: Master the English language if you want to compete globally and make yourself more employable.
In making the call, state secretary Datuk A Rahman Yahya said that English was vital not only as an additional language but also for effective communication in discharging one’s duties.
“One cannot deny that English is the global language of communication. In order to improve your English, you have to facilitate an environment that promotes the language.
“You must start speaking English everywhere you go and with whoever you meet.
“Be inquisitive to learn and do not be shy to be corrected in your grammar,” he told participants of the ‘Mega Trenglish Camp 2018’ at the Primula Beach Hotel.
Themed ‘Ignite The Spirit of Success’, the Petronas-sponsored programme, referring to Transforming English in Terengganu (Trenglish), involved 240 Form Three and Four students from 40 schools in the state.
Present was Petronas east coast regional office general manager Wan Mohd Hasnan Abdullah.
Rahman reminded the students to emulate those from Japan and South Korea whose youths had picked up English tremendously, enabling them to communicate with foreigners.
“More amazingly, some of the Japanese and Koreans can also speak Malay!” he said.
Meanwhile, Wan Mohd Hasnan said that Petronas gave priority to students who spoke English when applying for its scholarships, where 887 people had secured its bursaries to date.
“English is a prerequisite as our employees need to communicate with multi-national companies for meetings, discussons, documentations and the like.
“To master the language, one must have the passion, desire and determination to learn, coupled with the opportunity.
“It may be difficult at first, but do not give up easily,” he said.
Wan Mohd Hasnan cited how famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison made numerous attempts before succeeding in inventing the light bulb.
“If Edison had given up, we will not have the light bulb today,” he said.
Wan Mohd Hasnan called on students to inculcate a reading culture and to speak English regularly in order to gain confidence in the language.
